What should a CD cost?
This seemingly simple question has come to represent one of the more daunting questions of our young third millennium.
Ten years ago, the answer seemed clearer – somewhere between 10 and 15 bucks. 2000′s signature commercial album, ‘N Sync’s No Strings Attached, retailed (again and again) in that range. And 2000′s marquee critical album, Radiohead’s Kid A, sold admirably as well.
I’m dating myself, but I remember buying Fugazi’s Steady Diet of Nothing for $8.00 at Rockin’ Rex on Central Avenue when I was in high school. It cost $8.00 because that’s what Dischord Records said it cost on the back.
At the time, relative to releases from other labels, $8.00 seemed more than fair. At Tower Records further up Central, for instance, I probably paid a few bucks more generally for other notable, contemporaneous releases.
Versus its July, 1991 release date, the inflation-adjusted cost of Steady Diet of Nothing is approximately $13.00 today.
As a little science experiment, we’re going to try to sell Kill Screen CDs for $13.00.
Stake in the ground
Kill Screen has begun to establish shop. Soon, we’ll be selling mixes. But first, we need to make them. Stay tuned.
